Delaware County has a long tradition of a working landscape – the farmers tend and maintain the landscape, and are in turn sustained by it. However, changing demographics, unwise development, and the rising price of farmland as it is purchased by second homeowners and New York City are all threatening the future of our working landscape. To counter this trend, Farm Catskills is working with farmers and their customers on conservation efforts that include both protecting the farmland and helping farmers sustain their livelihood. Lucky Dog Farm and applewood restaurant exemplify these efforts.

Visit the Farm Catskills table at the Farm Fair on Sunday, September 5, from 2-7:00 p.m. The West Kortright Center (www.westkc.org) celebrates the bounty of our local farms with an event featuring food, music and agri-business organizations and services. Come meet your local farmers and sample some amazing foods.

How far would you need to travel to make a meal with ingredients that are all considered local? The sun is shining but night time freezing temperatures, ground still frozen and winter weather still a looming possibility it seems like a difficult proposition unless ‘local’ includes Florida.  The Delaware County grass-roots organization FARM CATSKILLS was just the group to take on the challenge and not only succeed but triumph over the palettes of teens with rave reviews.
